Every film, big or small, cultural or mainstream, is trying to attract investors, public support, a director and cast, distributors, cinema exhibitors and eventually the cinema-going public. No matter how good a film is, without a well conceived and cost-effective marketing plan, it has little chance of success in the very crowded and competitive marketplace.
The producers role is to orchestrate the films progress from developing the script, hiring the talent and securing finance to its sales and international distribution, but also to correctly position the film in the market. It is essential for producers to be able to present a cost-effective marketing plan for each project.
The Film Marketing Workshop emphasizes a "hands-on" and practical approach using current films and modern marketing techniques. The course is composed of presentations, demonstration and discussion and one-to-one consultations by leading professionals with each participant. * planning cost-effectively
* approaching buyers
* completing pre-sales and sales

* using press and public relations
* briefing still photographers to convey adequate images of the film
* creating visual design (sales sheets, brochures, posters)
* working with trailers and showreels editors

VIVISECTfest 2008
Theme: Totalitarian Regimes - View from Inside and Outside
New Festival edition specifically dealing with the topic of "Totalitarian Regimes – View from Inside and Outside" (2008/2009), aimed at indicating the political and art ideas resulting in crushing totalitarian regimes in the former socialist and communist countries. Also, this programme will present major challenges the countries that belonged to the former Eastern Block are faced with.
Concept of the Fourth Edition of VIVISECTfest
Basic idea of the fourth edition of the VIVISECTfest is to, within film programme and photograph exhibitions, also present creations by authors from the area of the former Yugoslavia and abroad, specifically dealing with the issue of totalitarianism. Through various views of authors and the roundtable debate, we want to present the method in which various political and art ideas resulted in the breakdown of totalitarian regimes, with special emphasis on the situation in the former communist countries.
VIVISECTfest programmes are realised through three programme units:
1. Organisation of the programme called "Ahead of the Fourth Edition of VIVISECTfest" (July, August, September, October 2008). The programme called "Ahead of the Fourth Edition of VIVISECTfest" is aimed at raising interest among wider public in Novi Sad and other towns in Serbia and the former Yugoslavia in the programme to be organised as seven-day event in Novi Sad in December.

VIVISECtfest 04 - Background
The twentieth century was marked by two world wars, and a high number of local wars and revolutions in-between, the rise of totalitarian movements and undermining of parliamentary governments which resulted in new types of tyrannies, single party and military dictatorships, and seemingly firmly established totalitarian governments which relied on mass support.
After several years of domineering authoritarian regimes, many newly established states, that belonged to the Eastern Block, suddenly found themselves free and, at the same time, insecure and unprotected. At the beginning of the third millennium, those hoping to acquire integration in European Union as well as those who remembered the old socialist times with nostalgia, were disappointed with the transition. Nowadays, many of these states are faced with the occurrence of extreme nationalistic ideas, general apathy of citizens to take part in politics, and the lack of self-organisation, which may result in accepting the fact that they have no power to change things, but that this may only be done by an influential leader who promises to save them.
The Festival to be organised in 2008/2009 will, through the medium of documentary and photography, provide the information that may facilitate the understanding of accelerated flows of history and the obstacles faced with by the countries that used to be behind the Iron Curtain.

DFA's Festival is the oldest dance film festival in the world that sparked a global explosion of activity. Co-sponsored by the Film Society of Lincoln Center since 1996, DOCF celebrates the immediacy, energy, and mystery of dance as combined with the intimacy of film. What we are looking for: We seek strong synergies of dance and film, whether it be a dance made for the camera, documentary, adaptation of a stage work or site specific creation. We also welcome animation, narratives, and works in which the kinetic energy and rhythmic design comes solely from the editor or lighting designer. Dance films can be driven from the prime perspective of dance, cinema, visual arts, or in the case of documentaries, information. Our host venue prefers to present only New York Premieres.

Each year at the Sundance Film Festival, we select 120-125 Feature Films and 80-90 Short films to play in one of 10 Festival programs. Films that are selected to be in one of our five competition programs are eligible for Jury Prizes in their respective categories. Eligibility requirements for each competition program vary, but our four Feature Film competition programs are the most stringent. Please note that you cannot select which of these 10 programs to submit your film to! Instead, you must select from one of the following six submission categories:
U.S. NARRATIVE FEATURE FILM:
Any narrative work of fiction with a running time of at least 70 minutes, including films that are shot in a "mockumentary" style. In order to qualify as a US Narrative Feature Film, the submitted project must be either scripted or improvisational fiction, and at least half of the project's financing must originate from within the United States.
U.S. DOCUMENTARY FEATURE FILM:
Any non-fiction film with a running time of at least 50 minutes, NOT including entirely scripted or improvised fictionalizations of actual events. If your documentary contains some dramatization of actual events, you may submit in this category, but we will ultimately decide which program is best suited for your project, if accepted. In order to qualify as a US Documentary Feature Film, at least half of the submitted project's financing must originate from within the United States.
INTERNATIONAL NARRATIVE FEATURE FILM:
Any narrative work of fiction with a running time of at least 70 minutes, including films that are shot in a "mockumentary" style. In order to qualify as an International Narrative Feature Film, the submitted project must be either scripted or improvisational fiction, and at least half of the project's financing must originate from outside of the United States.
INTERNATIONAL DOCUMENTARY FEATURE FILM:
Any non-fiction film with a running time of at least 50 minutes, NOT including entirely scripted or improvised fictionalizations of actual events. If your documentary contains some dramatization of actual events, you may submit in this category, but we will ultimately decide which program is best suited for your project, if accepted. In order to qualify as an International Documentary Feature Film, at least half of the project's financing must originate from outside of the United States.
U.S. SHORT FILM:
Any narrative film of U.S. origin with a running time of 69 minutes or less, OR any documentary film of U.S. origin with a running time of 49 minutes or less. In order to qualify as a U.S. Short Film, at least half of the submitted project's financing must originate from the United States.
INTERNATIONAL SHORT FILM:
Any narrative film of International origin with a running time of 69 minutes or less, OR any documentary film of International origin with a running time of 49 minutes or less. In order to qualify as an International Short Film, at least half of the submitted project's financing must originate from outside of the United States.
The following is a breakdown of each of the 10 Festival categories, with eligibility requirements for each:
DRAMATIC COMPETITION (16 U.S. Feature Films):
Films in this program must be WORLD PREMIERES in order to be considered. If your film has played at any other film festival, been released on DVD or broadcast on television or the internet, or had a public theatrical screening anywhere in the world, it is not eligible for this program. In order to qualify, the submitted project must be either scripted or improvisational fiction, have a total running time of at least 70 minutes, and more than 50% of the project's financing must originate from within the United States.
DOCUMENTARY COMPETITION (16 U.S. Feature Films):
Films in this program must be WORLD PREMIERES in order to be considered. If your film has played at any other film festival, been released on DVD or broadcast on television or the internet, or had a public theatrical screening anywhere in the world, it is not eligible for this program. In order to qualify, the submitted project must be a non-fiction documentary subject (“mockumentaries” do not qualify), have a total running time of at least 50 minutes, and 50% of the project's financing must originate from within the United States.
SHORTS COMPETITON (80-90 U.S. & International Short Films):
All short films are selected to play before features or in one of eight Shorts Programs, and all accepted Shorts compete against each other in one single competition. A narrative short film must have a total running time of 69 minutes or less (though we recommend that narrative shorts be under 40 minutes), while a documentary short film must have a total running time of 49 minutes or less. Short films may have been broadcast on television or on the internet, screened at any number of other festivals, or exhibited theatrically and still maintain their eligibility. The only requirements for Shorts are that they not be distributed via any medium during the 10 days of the Festival, and they cannot have been released on DVD prior to the Festival.
WORLD CINEMA DRAMATIC COMPETITION (16 International Feature Films):
Films in this program must be U.S. PREMIERES in order to be considered. Your film may have played at other festivals outside of the U.S. and still qualify. If your film has played at any other U.S. film festival, been released on DVD or broadcast on television or the internet, it is not eligible for this program. In order to qualify, the submitted project must be either scripted or improvisational fiction, have a total running time of at least 70 minutes, and more than 50% of the project's financing must originate from outside of the United States.
WORLD CINEMA DOCUMENTARY COMPETITION (16 International Feature Films):
Films in this program must be U.S. PREMIERES in order to be considered. Your film may have played at other festivals outside of the U.S. and still qualify. If your film has played at any other U.S. film festival, been released on DVD or broadcast on television or the internet, it is not eligible for this program. In order to qualify, the submitted project must be a non-fiction documentary subject, have a total running time of at least 50 minutes, and 50% of the project's financing must originate from outside of the United States.
SPECTRUM (20-25 U.S. & International Feature Films):
This program is a varied selection of out-of-competition dramatic and documentary films from some of the most promising new filmmakers from the U.S. and around the world. Non-competition films do not need to retain any sort of premiere status, and are allowed to have screened at up to two other film festivals before Sundance. However, they may not have been otherwise exhibited theatrically to the public, released on DVD or on the internet, or broadcast on television in their entirety.
PARK CITY AT MIDNIGHT (8 U.S. & International Feature Films):
A treat for true cinephiles and casual filmgoers alike, this section presents an eclectic mix of horror, over-the-top comedies, surreal tales, explicit animation, and bizarre stories that defy categorization. Films selected for this program do not need to retain any sort of premiere status, and are allowed to have screened at up to two other film festivals before Sundance. However, they may not have been otherwise exhibited theatrically to the public, released on DVD or on the internet, or broadcast on television in their entirety.
NEW FRONTIER FEATURES (5 U.S. & International Feature Films):
The New Frontier program features experimental works of film, both scripted and documentary. Films selected for this program do not need to retain any sort of premiere status, and are allowed to have screened at up to two other film festivals before Sundance. However, they may not have been otherwise exhibited theatrically to the public, released on DVD or on the internet, or broadcast on television in their entirety.
PREMIERES (16-22 U.S. & International Feature Films):
To showcase the diversity of contemporary cinema, our Premieres program offers a selection of brand new work from more established American and international directors. In 2008, the latest films from directors such as Michel Gondry, Brad Anderson, Alan Ball, and Barry Levinson had their U.S. or World premieres within this category. Acceptance into this category is by invitation only, but films that are selected must maintain a U.S. or World Premiere status.
FROM THE COLLECTION (2 U.S. & International Feature Films):
Established as a joint partnership between Sundance Institute and the UCLA Film & Television Archive, the Sundance Collection at UCLA is a groundbreaking archive devoted to the preservation of the history of independent film. Each year, we select two films from this archive (usually newly preserved or restored works) for special screenings at the Festival. Acceptance into this category is by invitation only.

Created in 1986, La fémis provides artistic and technical training devoted to cinema and audiovisual professions. Since 1996, the school has offered continuous training sessions for cinema and audio-visual professionals who wish to acquire or perfect new professional skills. Archidoc, initiated in 2002 and supported by the EU MEDIA Programme and the Aquitaine Region, France, is designed to accompany filmmakers who have a documentary film project that uses archives. The objective is to develop and finetune their projects in a creative and professional environment. Archidoc is in keeping with a growing European environment of documentary production and recognition of the documentary genre itself. It is also relevant to the current European context in which the opening up of many archives is leading to a reflection on the creative use of archives, including private and family documents. Archidoc’s objective is to support the development of original film projects that use archives and to help their authors access the international documentary market.

ARCHIDOC - DOCUMENTARY AND ARCHIVES 2008
Sessions 1 and 2
The first two sessions are led by two tutors. In 2007, these were Erez Laufer (Israel) and Stan Neumann (France). The tutors help participants develop their project by tutoring their work on the point of view, on the storytelling
issues and on the role of archives in their film project. The tutors, who are also experienced editors, also advise participants in the editing process of the film trailer.
Session 1 - October 13 - 17, 2008
• Tutoring on projects in individual and small group sessions.
• Master Classes, where tutors and guest filmmakers present their own films. Their case studies demonstrate all the
different stages in the evolution of a project (script, rushes, footage, final film).
• A presentation of various visual treatments of archive materials.
• Presentation by an international audiovisual legal expert of concrete cases from his professional experience. He also advises participants on their individual projects.
• Personalised counselling on main archive sources, by an experienced archive researcher.
Session 2 - November 12 - 19, 2008
• Trailer editing session. Participants are given the possibility to edit or re-edit their film trailer with the help of an experienced editor.
• Advanced tutored writing sessions. Participants check and rewrite a new version of the synopsis and note of intent prepared during the intersession.
Session 3 - January 20 - 23, 2009
• Pitching technique training (Tue Steen Müller with Sibylle Kurz in 2006, and with Alexandre Cornu in 2007).
• Presentation of the contemporary professional European documentary film industry context.
• Pitch of projects to a panel of producers and European commissioning editors at FIPA, the International Audiovisual Programme Festival held annually in Biarritz, France.
In order to allow participants to situate their projects in the actual European industry context, an exeprienced producer or documentary commissioning editor presents a global situation of production and broadcasting of contemporary documentary films. At the FIPA, after being taught pitching techniques by two experts, participants present their projects to a panel of producers and European televisions commissioning editors.
