The 12th Jihlava IDFF (October 24 - 29, 2008) will again offer a wide variety of outstanding documentary films from all around the world. Opus Bonum, Between the Seas and Czech Joy remain the flagship competition programmes of the festival; different themes will be infused in the selection of films in Homo Balcanicus or Gender Bridge. The brand new section Fascinations will for the first time take a glimpse into the landscape of experimental documentary film.

The Maw Nain and Thaidhi will attend the workshop as observers; the two Burmese filmmakers attend the Yangon Film School, a training programme co-organized by IDF.

The European Film Academy proudly announces the nominations in the category EUROPEAN FILM ACADEMY DOCUMENTARY 2008 – PRIX ARTE. There is a total of nine documentary films nominated. This year’s documentary jury will now convene in Berlin to screen the nominated films and decide on the winner.

The main guest of this year’s Jihlava IDFF is a living legend of American documentary Frederick Wiseman. This still active film maker who is famous for his criticism of American governmental institutions will introduce a profile of his forty years long career. As a part of Translucent Beings category, he will present selected films, starting with his documentary Law and Order from 1969 and ending with his new film State Legislature that premiered only two years ago.

With the economic growth stalling, Estonia is reducing its state film financing this year and faces further cuts in coming years. The national film agency, the Estonian Film Foundation, has been told to reduce the 2008 budget of €4.1 million by €20,700 or 0.5% this year and is facing further cuts in 2009.

The 51st DOK Leipzig (October 27 - November 2) has revealed its 2008 programme selection. The International Competition consists of 19 documentary films, including René (dir. Helena Třeštíková), Gyumri (dir. Jana Ševčíková) or the multi-awarded Blind Loves (dir. Juraj Lehotský). 10 films will be presented in the German Competition; Generation DOK will highlight 19 films by emerging documentary filmmakers.

The Executive Committee of EDN, European Documentary Network, has appointed Line Sandsmark as the new director of the organisation. Line Sandsmark will start her new position as EDN Director on November 1. A long-time partner of IDF, EDN has been a key player in the support of international as well as East European documentary film since 1996.

The names of 8 mostly European documentary experts who will be in charge of the East European Forum workshop and the 3rd workshop session of Ex Oriente Film have been confirmed. Four of them will supervise 24 East European filmmakers who attended the year-long training programme; another four will oversee the project development of 20 filmmakers who applied directly for the East European Forum. Both workshops take place side by side October 22 - 24, concluding with the public presentations on the weekend of October 25 - 26.

After years of development, films that in the past attended the Ex Oriente Film workshop or found support at the East European Forum return to Jihlava. It has become a tradition in recent years that some 10 documentary films - often boasting international awards - revisit the place where they sought support in the development stage. All films will be included in the East Silver documentary market, accessible to international buyers, sales agents or journalists. At the beginning of October, the programme director will announce which films are selected for the festival programme as well. Congratulations!

INAUGURAL CZECH LION AWARD FOR DOCUMENTARY FILMS

Czech documentary films will finally receive recognition at this year's Czech Lion awards handed out by the Czech Film and Television Academy (CFTA). In the inaugural edition, judges will be considering all eligible documentaries made from Jan 1, 1993 - Dec 31, 2007. A shortlist of 10 films will then advance to the second round in which CFTA members select three best documentary films. The awards are overseen by CFTA, the Institute of Documentary Film and the Audiovisual Producers' Association.

The EDN Talent Grant 2008, presented at the Sarajevo Film Festival, goes to Croatian director Goran Devic. He was awarded for his film Three and will now have the opportunity to present a new project at the international pitching session Docs in Thessaloniki (March 18-22, 2009). Co-organized by the Sarajevo FF and EDN, the EDN Talent Grant aims to encourage and support up-and-coming documentary filmmakers from the Balkan region.

The current edition of the Baltic Sea Documentary Forum takes place September 3 - 7, 2008 in Riga, Latvia. Twenty-five documentary projects from Estonia, France, Georgia, Germany, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Russia, Sweden and Ukraine will be presented at this year's Forum that combines a pitching workshop, pitching sessions and one-on-one meetings with commissioning editors. Documentary screenings include Stone Silence, Music Partisans, Blind Loves or The Deconstruction of an Artist that in the past attended Ex Oriente Film and the East European Forum.

BLIND LOVES TO OPEN IN CZECH THEATRES

Juraj Lehotský's documentary film Blind Loves will be released in Czech theatres September 4, 2008. Awarded at this year's Cannes IFF, the film captures the many remarkable worlds experienced by its four protagonists. Blind Loves will also be released in a special version for the blind that features an extra audio track.

Another Ex Oriente Film workshop's film awarded. Director Beata Dzianowicz and producer Krzysztof Kopczyński have received the Critic’s Week Award (Le Prix SRG SSR idee Suisse/Semaine de la Critique) for the film “Kites” at the 61st Locarno International Film Festival which ended on the 16th of August 2008. It is the main prize awarded in the international competition of full-length documentaries of the festival “Critic’s Week” organized by Switzerland’s national association of film journalists and the most important award this year for a documentary film at the festival.
